ISO 26000 social responsibility guidance

ISO 26000 gives guidance on social responsibility. It helps organizations of any kind think about how their decisions and activities affect society and the environment, and how to act in an accountable and transparent way. It is not a management system standard and is not intended for certification. Organizations use it to inform policy, stakeholder engagement and reporting.

Info. Showing a standard does not mean a partner holds scope for it. How matching works.

Who it may be relevant for

  • Organizations developing a social responsibility or sustainability approach
  • Public bodies and companies reviewing how they treat people, communities and suppliers
  • Teams preparing stakeholder engagement or sustainability reports
  • Procurement teams wanting a reference for what responsible conduct can include

What it covers

  • Core principles such as accountability, transparency, ethical behaviour and respect for stakeholders
  • Seven core subjects: governance, human rights, labour practices, the environment, fair operating practices, consumer issues and community involvement
  • How to recognise social responsibility and identify stakeholders
  • Ways to integrate social responsibility into daily practices and communication

What it can help with

  • A shared reference for discussing responsibilities beyond legal minimums
  • A broader checklist of issues to consider when engaging stakeholders
  • Support for sustainability policies and reports written in your own words
  • A basis for mapping topics to certifiable standards where those exist, such as ISO 14001 or ISO 45001

What the pathway means

ISO 26000 gives guidance and is not intended for certification. It has no requirements that can be audited, and an organization cannot be certified to it. It can be applied internally, and some organizations describe how they have used it. A claim to be certified to ISO 26000 misrepresents the standard, so treat it with caution. If you want an independently audited standard on a related topic, look at ISO 14001, ISO 45001 or ISO 37001. MIYAAR CONNECT does not audit or certify.

Where it is typically used

  • A company using the core subjects to organize its sustainability report
  • A public body checking that its community and supplier practices cover the main issues
  • A group deciding which management system standards best support its stated commitments

What adopting it involves

  • Internal staff time for review, stakeholder engagement and drafting policies
  • Whether you produce a public report and how in depth it is
  • Any outside advisory, training or reporting support, which is your own commercial choice
  • The size of the organization and the number of stakeholder groups

What affects timing

  • How much stakeholder engagement already happens and can be reused
  • Time to review the seven subject areas against current practice
  • Management agreement on priorities and commitments
  • The reporting cycle you plan to align with

What to have ready

  • A list of your main stakeholder groups: staff, customers, suppliers, communities, regulators
  • Existing policies on ethics, labour, environment and community impact
  • Any public commitments or customer requirements on responsible conduct
  • A view of which subjects are most material to your sector

Recognition

No certification, accreditation or conformity scheme exists for ISO 26000, so there is nothing to check with an accreditation body. ISO states that the standard is not meant for certification or for regulatory or contractual use. If a certificate is offered, ask who issued it, what it covers and what it was assessed against, and read our guidance on misleading claims. Training certificates for individuals show course attendance only. Buyers decide what evidence they accept, so check the tender wording.

Common questions

Can we be certified to ISO 26000?
No. ISO 26000 is guidance with no requirements, and it is not intended for certification. Claims of certification to it misrepresent its purpose. You can say your organization uses it as guidance, and describe how.
Is there any accredited scheme for it?
We found none. Accreditation applies to certification of management systems or competence against requirement standards. A body offering ISO 26000 certificates should explain on what basis it does so.
What can we use instead if a buyer wants evidence?
Ask what exactly the buyer wants. Options include a public report, policies, or certification to a relevant standard such as ISO 14001 or ISO 45001. The buyer's own documents set the requirement.
Is it a legal requirement?
No. It is voluntary guidance. Legal duties are set by law, and you should check them separately.
