ISO standards for education and training providers

Schools, universities and training centres meet ISO standards through parent and learner expectations, partner institutions and the requirements of education authorities. The common concerns are how learner needs are identified, how teaching staff are assessed and supported, and how student records are protected. ISO 21001 is written specifically for educational organizations.

Why organizations in this sector ask

Learner and parent confidence

Families and sponsors want to see that learning services are planned, monitored and improved.

Staff competence and development

Teachers and trainers need defined roles, observation, feedback and training that is recorded.

Records and campus safety

Student records, assessments and safeguarding information need careful handling, and campuses carry ordinary workplace and laboratory risks.

Standards to look at first

Common challenges

  • Learner feedback is collected but rarely leads to documented changes.
  • Teaching quality depends on individuals, with little shared method across departments.
  • Assessment and grade records are held in many systems and spreadsheets.
  • Accreditation or licensing requirements from education authorities sit alongside, and are different from, ISO standards.
  • Safety procedures for laboratories and workshops are not applied the same way across campuses.

Evidence you may be asked to show

  • Learner feedback and complaint records with follow-up actions.
  • Teacher and trainer qualification, observation and training records.
  • Course design, review and assessment moderation records.
  • Access control rules for student information systems.
  • Safety inspection and incident records for campuses and workshops.

Questions an auditor might ask

  • How do you find out what learners and their sponsors need, and how does this shape your courses?
  • How do you check that teaching staff are competent, and how is development recorded?
  • What happens after a learner complaint is received?
  • Who can change grades or assessment records, and how is that controlled?
  • How do you review whether your courses are achieving their intended outcomes?

What a certification scope can look like

  • Example: Delivery of primary and secondary education services at a named school.
  • Example: Design and delivery of professional and vocational training courses.
  • Example: Provision of higher education programmes and associated student support services.
  • Example: Delivery of corporate training and assessment services.

These are illustrations to discuss with the certification body. We do not approve or pre-approve scope. MIYAAR CONNECT explains and connects; the certification body audits and decides.

Common questions

Is ISO 21001 the same as accreditation of a school or university?
No. Academic accreditation and licensing come from education authorities and professional bodies. ISO 21001 is a management system standard audited by a certification body. Check with the education authority about its requirements.
ISO 21001 or ISO 9001 for a training centre?
Both can apply. ISO 21001 is tailored to educational organizations. ISO 9001 is generic. Ask the people who will rely on the certificate which they prefer.
Can the certificate cover only some programmes or campuses?
Scope can be defined by activity and location, and is agreed with the certification body.
How is the cost set?
By staff and learner numbers, campuses and the range of programmes, among other things. See the page on certification cost factors. A certification body gives the quote.
