ISO standards for financial services

Banks, insurers and fintech companies work under close regulatory and customer scrutiny. ISO standards do not replace financial regulation, and no certificate shows that a firm is compliant with it. They do offer a structure for information security, continuity of critical services, compliance management and anti-bribery controls, which often come up in third-party risk reviews.

Why organizations in this sector ask

Third-party and vendor risk reviews

Larger institutions assess their suppliers and partners. Fintechs and service providers are often asked about security and continuity controls.

Continuity of critical services

Payments, trading and customer access must recover quickly after disruption. Continuity management helps plan and test that.

Governance and integrity

Boards and regulators ask how obligations, conflicts of interest and bribery risk are managed.

Standards to look at first

Common challenges

  • Critical services depend on third-party providers whose resilience is not well understood.
  • Recovery plans exist but have not been tested against realistic scenarios.
  • Compliance obligations are tracked in separate lists by different teams.
  • Access to sensitive systems is granted broadly and reviewed rarely.
  • Due diligence on agents and intermediaries is inconsistent.

Evidence you may be asked to show

  • A business impact analysis and recovery objectives for critical services.
  • Results of continuity or disaster recovery exercises.
  • An information security risk register and access review records.
  • A compliance obligations register with named owners.
  • Due diligence, conflict of interest and gifts records.

Questions an auditor might ask

  • Which of your services are critical, and how quickly must each be restored?
  • When did you last test your recovery plan, and what changed afterwards?
  • How do you identify new compliance obligations and make sure they are assigned?
  • How do you check third-party providers that support critical services?
  • How are conflicts of interest and gifts recorded and reviewed?

What a certification scope can look like

  • Example: Provision of digital payment processing services, including supporting infrastructure.
  • Example: Operation of customer-facing online banking channels and supporting IT services.
  • Example: Policy administration and claims processing for an insurance business.
  • Example: Development and operation of a lending or wallet application.

These are illustrations to discuss with the certification body. We do not approve or pre-approve scope. MIYAAR CONNECT explains and connects; the certification body audits and decides.

Common questions

Does certification show compliance with financial regulation?
No. Certification relates to a management system within a stated scope. Regulatory requirements come from the financial regulator, so check with it directly.
Which standard should a fintech start with?
Many start with ISO/IEC 27001 because partners and banks ask about security. Others add continuity or privacy later. The guide on choosing a standard can help you think it through.
Can we limit certification to one product or business unit?
Scope can be limited to defined activities and units, agreed with the certification body. Be ready to explain what is excluded and why.
How is the cost estimated?
By people in scope, locations and the complexity of systems and services. See the page on certification cost factors. A certification body provides the quote.
